Can Your Home Care Package Cover Respite Care at Home?

Can Your Home Care Package Cover Respite Care At Home

Caring for a loved one is a commitment filled with love, but everyone needs a break now and then. Respite care provides that much-needed temporary relief for caregivers, allowing them to recharge while ensuring their loved ones continue to receive compassionate and professional care. One common question we encounter at Brightwater is whether a Home Care Package (HCP) can cover the costs of respite care at home.

Home Care Packages are government-funded programs designed to support older Australians who wish to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. These packages range from basic care needs (Level 1) to high care needs (Level 4), covering various services including personal care, nursing, social support, and more. We've got a full guide to the package levels available here

Respite Care at Home: An Overview

Respite care at home allows primary caregivers to take a break, with services that can be arranged for a few hours per week or fortnight. This flexibility means that care can be tailored to the specific needs of both the caregiver and the person receiving care, ensuring a seamless continuation of care and support. We recently chatted to a few clients already receiving respite support to discuss how it improves their lives

Can HCP Cover Respite Care?

Yes, your Home Care Package can indeed cover the cost of respite care at home. This inclusion allows caregivers the opportunity to take a break, attend to personal matters, or simply rest, knowing their loved ones are in safe hands. The funding from the package can be used to arrange for a professional caregiver to come to the home, providing the necessary services as outlined in the care plan.

How to Arrange Respite Care Using Your HCP

If you do not currently have a HCP, you will need:

Assessment: My Aged Care will organise an ACAT assessor to assess your needs and the needs of the person you care for to ensure that respite care at home is the best solution for you both.

Planning: Together with your care provider, you'll develop a plan that details how your Home Care Package will be used to fund respite care services.

Approval: Once the plan is approved, your provider will arrange for the respite care services to commence, ensuring that all needs are met with the utmost compassion and professionalism.

If you already have an HCP, you can have a chat with your coordinator to update your plan to include respite services.

Respite care is an essential component of the caregiving journey, providing necessary breaks for caregivers while ensuring continuous, quality care for their loved ones. Thanks to the flexibility of Home Care Packages, accessing respite care at home is a viable option for many Australian families.
